Find the Best Las Vegas Hotels and Restaurants

It’s hard to go wrong when choosing from the many options of Las Vegas hotels. Colleague Ryan Jacobson and his wife spent Mother’s Day weekend in Sin City. In last week’s post he spotlighted a few of the amazing entertainment choices—like Absinthe. Today, it’s all about their experiences with lodging and food.

Choosing from the Vegas Hotels

When it came to deciding where to stay, Lora and I followed three simple guidelines. First, we wanted something inexpensive. Second, it needed a nice pool. Third, it had to be in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip. Because we were walking everywhere, we wanted to keep everything close. If you’ve ever walked from Mandalay Bay to The Venetian in the hot Vegas weather, you know what I mean.

We chose Paris Las Vegas—and we couldn’t have been happier. We arrived a mere 7 hours ahead of check-in time, hoping to drop off our luggage. Instead, a kind woman said that our room was ready. She waived the early check-in fee and wished Lora a “Happy Mother’s Day.” Despite the many great Vegas hotels, I don’t believe we will ever stay anywhere else again.

The room was gorgeous. The bed was comfortable. The pool was spacious with plenty of spots for sunbathing or sitting in the shade.

Food on the Las Vegas Strip

Our first stop after check-in was our favorite buffet: the Wicked Spoon. In all honesty, it’s the only buffet we’ve ever tried—but it’s so delicious we don’t want anything else! It’s located in The Cosmopolitan, one of the nicer Vegas hotels. The brunch options aren’t too exotic; it’s a whole lot of comfort food. We got our fill of everything from pancakes to pizza to fried chicken. To top it off, the dessert selection was seemingly endless.

After eating at the Wicked Spoon, our appetites were ruined (in a good way) for a solid 24 hours. But we did manage to enjoy a late-night treat at Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop—a perfect escape from the steamy Vegas weather. The Ocean Beach Sea Salt Caramel Sundae was life-changing.

We didn’t eat a full meal again until lunch on Sunday. We opted to try Flour & Barley. Lora was pleasantly surprised to find her favorite drink on tap: Pineapple Cider. As for their pizza, you can’t go wrong with a brick oven. It tasted amazing! I ordered a Farm House, complete with bacon, ham, sausage, and fried eggs on top. The combination is a winner.

We closed our vacation on Sunday night, with a fancy (aka expensive) dinner at the Old Homestead Steakhouse in another of the favorite Vegas hotels: Caesars Palace. We chose it because it was near Absinthe. I must admit that there was a little bit of sticker shock when we first saw the menu. We live in rural Minnesota, where steak isn’t dry-aged and doesn’t cost $70. As soon as we took our first bite, though, it all made sense. It was the best steak we’ve ever eaten.

Yes, there’s truly something for everyone in Las Vegas. I hope this information helps when you plan your next vacation. Make sure to read Ryan’s recommendation for a perfect weekend on the Las Vegas Strip.
